ParticipantI’ve also tried the Freshpet dry dog food for my golden retriever and have mixed feelings about it. It’s definitely on the pricier side compared to other brands, but its ingredient list is one of the best out there with real meats and veggies.
However, I noticed that my furry friend wasn’t as enthusiastic about this meal compared to his previous ones. Took me awhile to realize that he probably prefers some crunchiness in his meals – he loved chewing his previous, more traditional kibble!
As an alternative, I’ve started mixing in a bit of high-quality grain-free kibble with the Freshpet, just to add that extra texture. This seems to be working well for us at the moment!
For any newbies considering this transition, do keep a close eye on your dog’s reaction to the change. They might love it or they might not be huge fans. If you notice any negative reactions, maybe book an appointment with your vet just to discuss diet options – no harm in making sure what we feed our pets suits their pallet and keeps them healthy!
Anyone else here mixed Freshpet with kibble? How’d that go for you?

ParticipantI can definitely understand your mixed feelings. I tried Freshpet for my German Shepherd a few months ago. While the kibble size was perfect, and the ingredients seemed high-quality, my dog took some time to adjust to it. This could’ve been due to the blend’s consistency, which was different than what he was used to. For the price point at which Freshpet is offered, I believe there are alternative brands that deliver similar quality if not better. Before making any decisions though, it might be worth discussing this with your vet as each dog responds differently to change in diet. Anybody else here tried a different brand they’d recommend after Freshpet?

ParticipantI found Freshpet dry food to be pretty decent as well. However, I noticed the kibble size was a bit too large for my Corgi so had to switch it up and give it to my larger Labrador instead who didn’t seem to have an issue. Did anyone else face this issue or am I the only one? If Freshpet came with a smaller sized option, I’d be all over it in a heartbeat.

ParticipantAbsolutely agree about the kibble size of Freshpet dry dog food! I’ve been using this brand for my pug, and let me tell you, the struggle is real. Every mealtime turns into a mini game of chasing after runaway kibbles. Quality-wise, though, it’s right up there in my book, but convenience is definitely taking a hit. Maybe smaller breeds could benefit from tinier kibbles? Just a thought to toss up to the Freshpet folks!

ParticipantYou’re right about the kibble size of Freshpet dry dog food. My Beagle mix, Max, found them a little too large to comfortably chew on. On the positive side, the freshness of the food is undoubtedly noticeable! We switched about half a year ago and it really appeals to Max’s picky nature. I’d recommend trying smaller softer kibble brands if your pooch struggles with larger sizes, like Royal Canin or Hill’s Science Diet. Always worth a chat with your vet to get a diet plan tailored to your buddy’s needs tho! Has anyone else experimented with switching brands for their fussy eaters?

ParticipantAbsolutely concur that the kibble size in Freshpet dry food can be a challege for some pups. My Cocker Spaniel, Daisy, found it a bit too much, considering her smaller jaws. We didn’t give up though – Daisy loved the taste of Freshpet and so I started crushing the kibbles a bit before giving them to her. That did the trick! So might be worth trying if you’re facing similar issues. That being said, it would defintely help if they offered different sizes based on different breeds/sizes of dogs.

ParticipantI’m right there with you on the issue of kibble size for Freshpet dry dog food. I own a little Dachshund, Daisy, annd she initially had a tough time with the larger-sized kibbles. However, that didn’t deter us and we gradually introduced it to her diet by mixing it with her old dry food until she was comfortable. The quality ingredients and overall health benefits sure make up for any initial hassles. However, if the size continues to be a problem for your fur babies, I cannot stress enough that it’s worth discussing this concern with your vet or perhaps considering another brand that provides smaller kibble sizes.
Anyone else found ways to make this transition smoother for their pups? Would love to hear more tips.

ParticipantWhile the kibble size with Freshpet is indeed a bit larger than some other brands, my best bud Chester (a Corgi mix, if you’re curious), kind of enjoys the challenge! He always had an adventurous streak and tackling these kibbles gives him a bit of an extra game during meal times. But I completely understand not all dogs might be up for this plus-sized surprise in their food bowl.
Has anyone tried maybe moistening the bits with warm water or broth before feeding? It might help soften and break up the kibble a little bit. Just curious to see how others have tackled this kibble conundrum. Remember though, if any drastic changes in your pup’s eating habits occur, it’s never a bad idea to consult your vet just to be on the safe side!

ParticipantI definitely echo your sentiments about Freshpet’s kibble size. My Boston Terrier, Bruno had quite a hard time adjusting to these bigger kibbles initially. However, after consulting with my vet, I started soaking the kibbles in some warm water for a few minutes before serving them to Bruno. The water softened the kibble making it easier for him to chew. Also, you might want to consider other brands that offer smaller kibble if the problem persists. Nutro Ultra Small Breed Adult is a great choice for small breeds as thier kibbles are comparatively smaller annd packed with well-rounded nutrition.

ParticipantIn my experience with my Golden Retriever, Lulu, I found that the larger kibble size was initially an adjustment for her too. However, soaking the Freshpet dry dog food in a bit of warm water softened it, making it easier to manage. This little trick could be useful if your pup is struggling with the bigger pieces. Moreover, although it may seem more expensive at first sight, I’ve noticed that Lulu feels full quicker from this food due to its higher nutritional content. Hence, I end up feeding her less and the bag lasts longer – so it kind of evens out cost-wise over time! Maybe your dog could get used to Freshpet with the right incentives and transition approach. Always remember though: if you’re worried about dental health or digestion issues because of kibble size, consult with a vet to ease your concerns.
